The pirate thing was a way to make me actually write something on my blog for a change.
To try and get me back into the spirit of blogging. As the weather cools I will no doubt spend a lot more time in front of the computer. Anyway I really must get out and plant my daffodils today. They have been sitting inside looking pitiful and brown, dying to get into the ground. I cant stand the way they look at me any longer.

Swedish pirates Ahoy
Yuse fullas may be familiar with the website "The Pirate bay". It is a torrent site (ie a place to find tv shows and music to download! OMG PIRATES!) run by a couple of anti-copyright activists from Sweden. Over there the anti-copyright movement is just as loud as the anti-piracy movement. People even turned out en mass to protest when "The Pirate bay" had their servers confiscated. But don't worry they were up and running again in no time.
The dudes who run the website reckon what they are currently doing is legal under Swedish law, because they don't host the pirated content themselves, only the pointers that let people get the files. (i.e guns don't kill people, people kill people.) Its yet to be tested in the Swedish court though. So for now they can carry on what they're doing. However half the internet reckons they're just in it for the money anyway, philosophies be damed. But like the rest of my generation all I can say is " meh, whatever".
Sweden is also cool because it has a Pirate party. (Thats a political party man, not like a
gathering with cake and beer.) If I lived in Sweden I'd be voting Pirate this month. Its main polices are on strengthening individual privacy and reforms regarding intellectual property rights. No rum drinking or swashbuckling policies though :-(
And for something completely different a swedish pirate band!

For a Great Game, Just Add Pirates!
Ahhh pirates. One of my favourite games of all time and quite possibly the best remake of a game as well. Sid Meiers Pirates is now lush, bright and 3d! Its still addictive and still bizarre (whats with the fancy arse dancing).
Basically you go around attack towns and ships till you have lots of gold, then you go marry some governors daughter. Sure it sounds weak but those sea battles are tense!
Its one of those rare games that I would quite happily take the day off to play, sort of like world of warcraft but in a less all life consuming kind of way. The replayability factor (I call it factor arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) is high and the game is cheap enough these days that you don't even have to be a pirate to play pirates.
Jolly Rodgering fun.

Mmmmmm Rum
Rum Jug, for storing yarrrrr rum.
Made by lost mountain clayworks these handcrafted jugs are customizable with your own logo or phrase.
Now I'm not a big rum drinker, but if I had me one of these jugs I'd probably drink it everyday!
Nothing too serious. Just a swig before work to keep my spirits up (Yarrrrrr!)

Im not always a pirate y'know.
Y'know what I hate, paying $15 to see a movie and having to sit through the anitpiracy messages. Freak show movie company. YOU ALREADY HAVE MY MONEY, now show me the movie.
And it gets worse.
The DVDs I buy (and I buy quite a few) also have this antipiracy message. A DVD I paid $30 for is now questioning my moral base everytime I press play. I think the anitpiracy dept needs to rethink their target market.
Its like Mercedes handing out anti-cartheft leaflets with every new S class purchase!
"Well sir since you obviously like cars it seems that its very likely you'll steal them as well!"
I'll probably get frisked next time I try to buy a box set. I may be paying $80 for season 5 of stargate but I probably have two star trek DVDs stuffed down my pants!

Hey! Wouldn't this be great on a T-shirt?
Ah it already is, I bless threadless! Actually I just bought three shirts off threadless during their latest $10 t-shirt sale. With the exchange rate being so good and postage being reasonable it usually works out at much less than $20NZ a t-shirt. Which I think is a bargin, because the shirts are limited edition, fresh designs (no "logos" or brand names, just cool designs) and quality t-shirts. You wont run into too many people in New Zealand wearing the same t-shirt as you.
plus they have a great loyalty program, just send in a photo of yourself wearing a threadless t-shirt and you'll get a $1.50 credit!
Or even if you fancy yourself a bit of a designer you can submit your artwork and the community will rate it. If it gets the big thumbs up your design gets printed and you get some cash. If your drawing skills are as crap as mine then you can also submit a slogan. Best ones get printed.
So check out threadless.com
its my favourite shop online!
what did I buy this time?
